Off to St. Norbert College

I'll be heading out to St. Norbert College where I'll be meeting with faculty and members of the community to discuss ways to support college-aged individuals with Asperger's Syndrome and Autism.  I'm especially eager to meet Kurt Weber who is the Director of the Counseling Center and a member of the Psychology Department and, who is very interested in developing innovative approaches to supporting his students.  I'm hoping I might even steal a few minutes to interview Kurt for a podcast on challenges faced by Directors of College Counseling Centers!

A few years ago college administrators would worry about college faculty becoming "disability friendly" for fear that their schools would become overwhelmed by, what they perceive to be, service consuming and therefore costly students with disabilities.  But I think they are worrying less as they themselves become more educated about Autism and Asperger's.  They also see that the programs we are developing, such as peer mentoring and other social support systems, cost little or nothing to implement.  Most importantly, they learn that students with spectrum problems have much to offer the college community in terms of special interests and abilities.  I'm looking forward to seeing what's up at St. Norbert!
