The story just keeps on getting increasingly amazing. First a band of psychologists protesting the role of their colleagues in interrogations and torture at Guantanamo force a vote of the American Psychological Association membership (APA) and win! But our listserve group didn't stop there...when the word got out that President-Elect Obama was considering appointing John Brennan, former director of the National Counterterrorism Center (who was connected to Bush policies on torture and interrogation) as CIA Director, psychologist and WithholdAPAdues activist Stephen Soldz drafted a protest letter on our behalf to Obama himself. Dozens of us quickly agreed to be co-signatories and today's AP news wire suggests that the psychologist letter contributed to Brennan's withdrawal as a candidate.
My hat is off to Stephen Soldz who gave two talks on campus here to overflowing audiences. I have those talks on video and will be seeking Stephen's permission asap to post them. His big point to our students on the day before the election here at Keene State College: "It's not enough to vote, you have to go out and work hard to solve problems that are personally important to you."
The letter even made TV news:
