My mother, Joan Welkowitz, was a few blocks from the World Trade Center on 9/11 and watched as the first plane hit. The trauma of that day would never leave her and I remember her saying that she knew it was "the day the world changed." Her biggest concern that she expressed to me two days later: That 9/11 would be used to deprive people of basic liberties.
