segregation and congregation rarely bring forth good fruit...where is the special ed world after school...what do kids with disabilities really need to learn for the majority of their lives after school (maybe like how to live in the world with the rest of us?)...Samuel Gridley Howe warned us of all this over 100 years ago as the first institutions opened up for mentally retarded children and adults...and we saw his prophecy unfold in the horrors and warehousing of thousands of people not long after the pomp and ceremony. Residential schools will be our future institutions...they look and sound nice now, but a small twist in societal attitude is all it takes to start the fall. Anyone who takes even a brief look at the history of services for people with disabilities can see how fragile this is.
