Although the topic is slightly different, weird media uses are also evident in the way some journalists misrepresent disabilities. One of my pet peeves is the use of "learning disability" to represent generic problems when, in fact, the term represents a specific category of children with disabilities in US law. To be sure, the term is used to refer to individuals with intellectual disabilities in the UK, but that doesn't excuse a journalist from the responsibility of checking her or his language when publishing content about a topic.
