When you consider how much of the Western justice system is based on the notion of punishment as being synonymous with justice, it's not surprising that we fail to heal crime. Right-wing types are always afraid that if the justice system considers any aspects of context (such as Asperger syndrome), then it opens the door to considering everyone else's context (poverty, brutal childhood, neurological disorders, etc.). But there's no question that we need a broader definition of justice, one that encompasses more than just the rights and wrongs of a single moment. Otherwise we just add more wrongs to the pile.
